Limited and open edition prints

This page is to inform the potential buyer of the materials used in my art work and fine art prints. Also in the future I will be offering small gift items such as Greeting cards and fridge magnets.

Quality is important to me and I have put much effort into insuring that my images will last.

This said, there is a ongoing debate concerning the archival life of prints using pigment or dye based printer inks. The Wilhelm Research Center is an institution dedicated to the study of materials used in the production of photographic images. This includes both traditional and modern methods.

As I have pointed out above, the debate is ongoing, regarding the permanence of the materials involved. Both traditional prints and modern print (inkjet prints) will fade if left in certain conditions for a period of time. This is due not only to exposure to sunlight, but also the gases and humidity present in the air.

Will the print you invest in last?

The answer is yes if displayed properly and materials used are acid free with a natural pH balance. I have chosen what research has shown to be reliable ink and papers (photographic and fine art media). The printer I use is a Pro-Epson 4000, which can produce prints up to 17 inches wide. The ink used is pigment based (Epson Ultrachrome), which is a durable ink that has a light fastness and permanence rating of 60+ years. Refer to the PDF file included on this page for a more detailed look at lifespans of different papers using the Ultrachrome inks. The papers I am using are not only Epson brands, I am also using Moab and Hahnemuhle fine art papers which are designed for pigment based inks.

I will be using a high quality protective coating on the limited edition prints. This coating is manufactured by Premier Arts which the Wilhelm Research Center has declared archival. This is also a water based product which is safe for the environment.

Pastel Reproductions

To produce the best quality representations of my pastels, I first scan the original (instead of using slides or negatives) in order to capture the image for print. Scanning an image does not mute the colors or flatten the textures found on the original. So what you end up with is a very detailed image. I next bring the image into Photoshop for color correcting and dust clean up if needed. Currently I am printing the images on Epson Water Resistant Canvas and Hahnemuhle photo rag paper which is 100% cotton. I love the canvas. It does a great job of displaying the texture of the pastels. The original pastel colors change to a slightly more saturated level than the original, and that is because it is a semi-gloss surface. The photo-rag works well with the less textured images, and in the image galleries I specify which media is used. I am selling most of the pastel reproductions as Limited Editions. This will also be posted with each image in the gallery. There will be some exceptions and these will be labeled as Open Editions. Also, the sizes sold and amount of each will be listed.

Photographic Images

These images vary in style, and I choose papers that will best display the content. Here is a list of media used, again this is noted with each image in the gallery. Epson Premium Semi-Matte Photo, Epson Enhanced Matte, Epson Water Resistant Canvas, Moab Entrada Natural, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, and A. Duerer Fine Art .

The photo collection has both limited and open edition prints. The limited edition prints are set at 200 prints per image at a specified size.

About Limited and Open Edition Prints

Limited Edition prints are sold in batches of 200. This is the maximum I will be selling for each print size. Some of the limited edition prints have two sizes and so 200 prints of each size will be printed. I reserve the right to print the image in gift form for greeting cards and fridge magnets. Also some the limited edition images may be used in future calenders. They will not be sold for publication in magazines or for advertising.

The limited edition prints will each have the date printed, title, artist name, paper (type, company, and brand) and ink used in the printer. These prints are considered to be Giclee prints. Also a high quality and certified archival protective coating will be applied to each print

The next type of prints available are the Open Edition Prints. There will be no limit to the quantity printed. I am able to sell rights to the image for advertising and in magazine publications etc.

Quality control for these prints will be the same as for the limited edition, but the papers used may be of a lower quality. This does not mean that they will not last for years. I will also treat them with a protective coating to help protect them from moisture and smudging.
